01:49 - 01:58
Chris Hensley
Would you be able to share your journey of being an elementary school teacher to becoming a financial education mentor with our listeners.
01:58 - 01:59
Danny Kofke
Absolutely.
01:59 - 02:00
Danny Kofke
Yeah, it's funny.
02:00 - 02:03
Danny Kofke
We definitely had a little fun before the show started, right, Denver?
02:03 - 02:05
Danny Kofke
Never know, it's old technology.
02:07 - 02:08
Danny Kofke
Good.
02:09 - 02:21
Danny Kofke
Yeah, so, I'm like, you mentioned, I was elementary school teacher for 18 years And, you know, my journey with becoming, I guess, involved in personal finance was way back in 2005.
02:21 - 02:25
Danny Kofke
That time I was teaching first grade, My wife was a teacher, we had our first child.
02:25 - 02:30
Danny Kofke
So, Tracy became a stay at home mom I was making about $42,000 a year.
02:30 - 02:32
Danny Kofke
So, not, not a lot.
02:33 - 02:34
Danny Kofke
But, we were able to do it.
02:34 - 02:40
Danny Kofke
And colleagues were like, hey, you should kind of let us know how, how you're doing it and kind of write a book.
02:40 - 02:48
Danny Kofke
And I never thought anything about it, but, um, just prompted to sit down and started and that kind of started my journey in financial education.
02:49 - 02:56
Danny Kofke
Then, you know, basically, right now, you know, I am still a teacher, it's just a different subject and a different audience.
02:56 - 03:00
Danny Kofke
So, I'm still kinda use that teachers heart, though, to help others do better with money.
03:02 - 03:03
Chris Hensley
I love it, I love it.
03:03 - 03:05
Chris Hensley
And that's such a huge area for people.
03:05 - 03:10
Chris Hensley
I mean, I work specifically with, with, with state employees.
03:10 - 03:22
Chris Hensley
So they're either teachers, K, you know, K through 12, but generally, they're going to be higher education, and so they can be really an expert in any area, but they may not be great with finance.
03:24 - 03:29
Chris Hensley
And so, that is something that, I know, it's a ton of help there.
03:29 - 03:37
Chris Hensley
You mentioned really being, you know, $40,000 a year, and then being able to accomplish these goals.
03:38 - 03:45
Chris Hensley
What inspired you to write the wealthy teacher, and what are the key lessons you hope readers take away from it?
03:46 - 03:54
Danny Kofke
Yeah, um, you know, obviously I'm with that title, but that one was geared towards teachers towards educators and, you know, for me, I think you just mentioned it.
03:54 - 04:03
Danny Kofke
You know, you deal with people that are educate, like, what I actually left teaching awhile ago, in the midst of my career, and I was in the investment world.
04:03 - 04:05
Danny Kofke
And we did a lot of stuff with school systems.
04:06 - 04:10
Danny Kofke
And, you know, every teacher you talk to, it's not like, you know, they, They don't have the Smarts.
04:10 - 04:13
Danny Kofke
They at least have to have a bachelor's degree to teach yet.
04:14 - 04:21
Danny Kofke
More and more of them had no idea, like how the pension system work, Social Security, their investments, anything like that.
04:21 - 04:28
Danny Kofke
So, it just showed me that, you know, you have people that aren't educated, that are smart, yet they Weren't taught.
04:28 - 04:35
Danny Kofke
And that's where, you know, for me with the wealthy teacher, that's what I wanted to do, is just to show, you know, teachers that first off, yes.
04:36 - 04:38
Danny Kofke
It can be tough living on a teacher salary, I've been there, done that.
04:38 - 04:48
Danny Kofke
But, it is enough, like, most teachers do make enough that they can set themselves up for financial success, both here in the now and then also in the future.
04:48 - 04:57
Danny Kofke
And, you know, I'm not sure how the pension formula works out in Texas, but here where I am in Georgia, it's a very solving, a very strong pension that teachers have.
04:57 - 05:07
Danny Kofke
So, I just try to encourage, you know, teachers basically, you know, with the book, that, first off, you can do well financially, but secondly, also, you know, you're gonna live, if you play your play it, right?
05:07 - 05:16
Danny Kofke
You can live wealthier in retirement than when you were teaching because of the way the pension system is set up, and then if you are smart with your investment, so.
05:16 - 05:17
Danny Kofke
You know.
05:17 - 05:26
Danny Kofke
Just one of the things I wanted to show them, that they could do it, it could be educated on it, and, you know, just because they weren't taught earlier on, it's never too late.
05:26 - 05:36
Danny Kofke
And, you know, that's the beauty about with teachers, you know, they are lifelong learners, most of them, so, It was just one of those things just to try to help them out and prove their financial knowledge.
05:39 - 05:41
Chris Hensley
I love it, I love it.
05:41 - 05:45
Chris Hensley
So you said a lot right there, so let me kind of unpack that a little bit.
05:45 - 05:50
Chris Hensley
You know, you mentioned that teachers themselves, it's kinda embedded that, their lifelong learners.
05:50 - 05:52
Chris Hensley
It's never too late, that's powerful.
05:52 - 06:00
Chris Hensley
Right, the idea that, It's never too late to get, and I would piggyback on the exact same thing you just shared about the Pension.
06:00 - 06:08
Chris Hensley
You know, a lot of them, they don't realize it, but sometimes they actually retire with a bigger paycheck than they had before they turn the pension on, right.
06:09 - 06:10
Danny Kofke
So.
06:10 - 06:11
Chris Hensley
This is, this is huge.
06:11 - 06:13
Chris Hensley
Thank you for sharing that with the listeners.
06:13 - 06:14
Chris Hensley
There.
06:14 - 06:24
Chris Hensley
If you're a teacher hearing that might, you know, push you in the right direction there, How did, how did your experiences as a teacher influence your approach to personal finance?
06:26 - 06:42
Danny Kofke
Um, you know, I was very blessed, and I started off as kindergarten, first grade teacher, and then after a few years, I transition to Special education, and the students I taught here in Georgia, there is a profound class, so basically, IQ's under 30, so most of my students were tube fed.
06:42 - 06:44
Danny Kofke
They didn't communicate.
06:44 - 06:45
Danny Kofke
You know?
06:45 - 06:46
Danny Kofke
A lot of physical needs.
06:47 - 06:51
Danny Kofke
But I learned more from them than I would ever teach them.
06:51 - 06:56
Danny Kofke
And that oozed over into my life with personal finance and money management.
06:56 - 07:00
Danny Kofke
You know, I think it's very important, obviously, to do well with money.
07:00 - 07:06
Danny Kofke
But I think a lot of times, we don't sit back and consider how fortunate we already are.
07:06 - 07:07
Danny Kofke
And it was every day.
07:07 - 07:13
Danny Kofke
Basically, I would see students, you know, my daughter's, hopefully, one day, I'll walk them down the aisle.
07:13 - 07:21
Danny Kofke
I have one in college right now that she's, you know, on her, own, the students, I taught, that probably wasn't going to be the case for them, nor their parents.
07:21 - 07:24
Danny Kofke
So, you know, for me, it just changed my approach.
07:24 - 07:30
Danny Kofke
I guess, basically, to life in general, that, you know, I can sit here, we can all sit here and complain about certain things.
07:30 - 07:35
Danny Kofke
But, like, why, how can I complain when I have a student that can't walk that can't talk?
07:35 - 07:36
Danny Kofke
That needs to be too bad?
07:36 - 07:44
Danny Kofke
Like, really, what my, my complaints are so petty compared to what that students going through or what their parents have to go through.
07:44 - 07:50
Danny Kofke
So, it definitely helped me, you know, analyze every day that how blessed I truly am.
07:50 - 07:51
Danny Kofke
And you know that, that, that life.
07:51 - 07:58
Danny Kofke
Yeah, I mean, I know some days are tougher than others, but, man, most of us expression, if you're listening to this show, you've already got it.
07:58 - 07:58
Danny Kofke
Good.
07:58 - 08:03
Danny Kofke
So, I think for me, it just helped me focus on what really is important.
08:03 - 08:06
Danny Kofke
First off, but secondly, how blessed I am.
08:07 - 08:08
Chris Hensley
I love it.
08:08 - 08:08
Chris Hensley
I love it.
08:08 - 08:13
Chris Hensley
Danny, that reminder, to everybody who's listening, that it's all relative, right?
08:13 - 08:14
Chris Hensley
You know.
08:14 - 08:14
Danny Kofke
We should.
08:14 - 08:17
Chris Hensley
Be optimist here, because it can always be worse.
08:17 - 08:25
Chris Hensley
And, you know, you Shared with us the, you know, you have two daughters and this is this is this is where real life kicks in, right?
08:25 - 08:27
Chris Hensley
Everybody's situation is going to be different.
08:27 - 08:43
Chris Hensley
And then, so I want to pivot a little bit and talk about some of these misconceptions that You Hear maybe in the teachers Lounge or just in general in your view, what are the biggest misconceptions people have about managing money on a teacher?
08:43 - 08:43
Chris Hensley
Salary?
08:45 - 08:49
Danny Kofke
Oh, and maybe not even just the teacher salary, but on their salary alone.
08:49 - 08:57
Danny Kofke
I mean, I think no studies that show that, I think it's something like 60% of us are living paycheck to paycheck and that's even people that are making, you know, six figures.
08:57 - 09:01
Danny Kofke
And I think for a lot of people, it's just that misconception.
09:01 - 09:05
Danny Kofke
They don't think they can do it, You know, my mom and dad were horrible of money.
09:05 - 09:08
Danny Kofke
I'm just going to be about my, my grandparents, my friends, Whatever.
09:08 - 09:10
Danny Kofke
And, we don't want to better ourselves.
09:11 - 09:16
Danny Kofke
So, you know, for me, I think it is one of those things, and obviously when you're on A, teachers are, we all probably agree.
09:16 - 09:24
Danny Kofke
You start off on a smaller scale, compared to some other professions, but the thing is, you can do it, And is it easy?
09:24 - 09:25
Danny Kofke
No, it's hard to say, no.
09:25 - 09:29
Danny Kofke
Sometimes the things that we really, really want, but it can be done.
09:30 - 09:38
Danny Kofke
And I think that to me, is probably the biggest misconception for all of us, really, is that you can manage money on a moderate income.
09:39 - 09:40
Danny Kofke
You have to track your spending.
09:40 - 09:44
Danny Kofke
You have to, you know, be mindful of what you're doing with your money, but it can be done.
09:44 - 09:47
Danny Kofke
So, I think that, to me, is probably the biggest misconception.
09:47 - 09:55
Danny Kofke
And then another one, too, especially kind of, going back to Educate and, you know, to teachers, is, I do know, to influence.
09:55 - 10:03
Danny Kofke
And part of the reason again, for writing the wealthy teacher, I want more teachers to stay in the profession, because, you know, most of us don't get into it, because we're going to make a lot of money.
10:03 - 10:15
Danny Kofke
But, if you can, educate yourself and realize, You know what, that, maybe your friend, I just graduated college is making a lot more right now that you, but when you analyze, like, you talked about that pension system and how that works.
10:15 - 10:23
Danny Kofke
I just want more people to be able to stay in teaching if that's something that they really enjoy and then see the long term benefits as well.
10:24 - 10:29
Chris Hensley
That's really, really profound thing, especially in Houston.
10:29 - 10:35
Chris Hensley
I don't know if you've seen the National news, but we're kind of having this crazy stuff going on locally with ASD.
10:36 - 10:39
Chris Hensley
No one other than having trouble.
10:48 - 10:48
Chris Hensley
Oh!
10:51 - 11:03
Chris Hensley
Goal is, just come in locally, so being teachers employed with the new superintendent, that's, you know, the thing that you mentioned, state, stay into, and you can, your finances on a moderate income, right?
11:03 - 11:14
Chris Hensley
So, the ad is, you know, you've been featured on numerous TV and radio shows which appearance was the most memorable for you and why.
11:15 - 11:28
Danny Kofke
I would have to say, it was a number of years ago, but the CBS early show, and the cool thing about that is they actually it's a producer from New York, came to our house, filmed us and everything, and then they actually flew Tracy.
11:28 - 11:31
Danny Kofke
My wife and I, up to New York put us in a hotel and had us on live.
11:31 - 11:37
Danny Kofke
And the greatest thing about that is that, I got to, you know, be there with Tracy.
11:37 - 11:39
Danny Kofke
And she got the spotlight as well.
11:39 - 11:45
Danny Kofke
Because I was fortunate to, a lot of times, I do it when I get on TV, Radio, it's just me, a ride and solo.
11:45 - 11:49
Danny Kofke
But it's a lifelong thing with Tracy as well.
11:49 - 11:51
Danny Kofke
She is a big part of our success.
11:51 - 11:55
Danny Kofke
You know, if you don't marry well, it's going to be tough to manage your finances.
11:55 - 12:00
Danny Kofke
So you know, we bought it together, and we work as a team and I think that, you know, appearance.
12:00 - 12:17
Danny Kofke
A, I was glad that she got to be in the spotlight because it takes a partnership and I think, you know, when you have a healthy relationship together and as a couple of you are working on like-minded goals, it strengthens, you know, not only your financial picture, but also your marriage as well.
12:17 - 12:25
Danny Kofke
So it was just kind of a cool thing that we both got to be recognized, and kinda got to celebrate her, and how you know what she does to make it possible.
12:25 - 12:29
Danny Kofke
And at that point, no point in time for us to be able to live on a teacher salary.
12:31 - 12:33
Chris Hensley
How long have you been married for?
12:35 - 12:36
Danny Kofke
I have been married 20.
12:36 - 12:37
Danny Kofke
It'll be 24 years in June.
12:38 - 12:40
Chris Hensley
Nice, I'm 25 years married.
12:40 - 12:52
Chris Hensley
So, I just want listeners to know that the information you just shared about relationships is, is, that's a byproduct of the question about this show that that was a neat experience to be flown up to New York.
12:52 - 12:58
Chris Hensley
But the other piece of it about your spouse coming along and you mentioned that plays right into our finances, right?
12:58 - 13:21
Chris Hensley
That it's, it's a team approach And if you are in a relationship, especially for that, this is a great, you know, Epiphany to realize that you have to work together, that your team members, with the same goal in mind, I think, that, in, itself, is a huge piece of the financial puzzle, and I appreciate you sharing that with listeners.
13:21 - 13:22
Chris Hensley
Because that's, that's good information.
13:22 - 13:32
Chris Hensley
Let's, let's pivot just one more time and, and talk about some of these effective strategies for parents to teach their children about money and financial responsibility.
13:35 - 13:49
Danny Kofke
Know, for us, I think the biggest thing is, we were always open and honest, and I think too many people make money, there's taboo topic that they don't talk about, they'll talk about, you know, the *** with their kids before they talk about money.
13:49 - 13:54
Danny Kofke
And I think that's what leads to two kids growing up and not knowing what to do.
13:54 - 14:01
Danny Kofke
And I mean, I've made money mistakes like everyone else, but you know, we have always been open and honest with even our daughters.
14:01 - 14:06
Danny Kofke
And it's, you know, tell them, OK, when, even when they were younger, you know, if you use your credit card, this is what can happen.
14:06 - 14:08
Danny Kofke
We do it, but we make sure we pay it off every month.
14:09 - 14:11
Danny Kofke
Or if we've made money mistake will sit down and say, you know what?
14:11 - 14:17
Danny Kofke
We did this, but we shouldn't have and we learned from it, but it was, we never hide our finances now, I don't know.
14:17 - 14:21
Danny Kofke
We don't get involved in the exact investments and you know, how much money we have saved and all that type of stuff.
14:22 - 14:30
Danny Kofke
I get a little too deep, but I think just overall, I think it's, it's just talk to your children about money and it can start as young.
14:30 - 14:33
Danny Kofke
When there are 3, 4 years old, and you just had a store.
14:33 - 14:35
Danny Kofke
No, we don't have the money set aside to buy that.
14:35 - 14:50
Danny Kofke
Just simple as that, but then even show them, this is what our money, you know, I make this much, and we are mortgage cost is our car payment, whatever it may be, but I think just honesty, and that way they're not burying their heads in the sand and then they have an understanding of how money works.
14:50 - 15:01
Danny Kofke
Because if you don't do it, I know many, many school districts now are implementing financial literacy, which is wonderful, but you know, if they don't learn in school and they don't learn from their parents, they're gonna learn it from their friends.
15:01 - 15:06
Danny Kofke
And most of their friends aren't going to be the best influencers for them when it comes to money.
15:08 - 15:11
Chris Hensley
For sure, for sure, That's, that's super important.
15:11 - 15:20
Chris Hensley
Sharing with kids, you know, that, the idea that some of the kids get into the world, and they don't know how many work truck, you know, how much does that cost a million dollars or a dollar?
15:20 - 15:21
Chris Hensley
I don't know.
15:21 - 15:22
Danny Kofke
Right.
15:22 - 15:24
Chris Hensley
So, so, sharing with them, that is huge.
15:24 - 15:27
Chris Hensley
And you told us that even as early as 3 and 4.
15:27 - 15:30
Chris Hensley
And not wasting the money mistakes that we make, right?
15:30 - 15:36
Chris Hensley
It's kinda like finding a silver lining to some of these bad things that happen with finances is.
15:36 - 15:42
Chris Hensley
There's a lesson there for them to learn and then you mentioned, financial literacy were bumping.
15:42 - 15:50
Chris Hensley
We've got just about five more minutes left on the show, and I would be, I would regret not asking you more about mentor row.
15:50 - 15:53
Chris Hensley
Because we just so good setup for the financial literacy stuff.
15:53 - 15:54
Chris Hensley
It.
15:54 - 15:57
Chris Hensley
Can you explain what mentor is to our listeners?
15:59 - 15:59
Danny Kofke
Yeah, absolutely.
15:59 - 16:05
Danny Kofke
So, you know, we kind of feel, I'm here, and you can look around, like what financial wellness, that was, this big bow, you know?
16:05 - 16:10
Danny Kofke
Word where a lot of companies were offered it, but it doesn't work for many people.
16:10 - 16:16
Danny Kofke
Financial wellness, it was like a companies offer it, and they just check this box and they don't really give people what they need.
16:16 - 16:20
Danny Kofke
So, we had a different approach and mentor where we have what we call money mentors.
16:20 - 16:24
Danny Kofke
So, we will sit down with you and walk you through your financial plan.
16:24 - 16:27
Danny Kofke
So, most people, you know, that are investing, right?
16:27 - 16:28
Danny Kofke
You have an advisor.
16:28 - 16:36
Danny Kofke
But, you know, sometimes with advisors, you know, they may not take people on data, if they don't have a certain amount of money to invest, right?
16:36 - 16:38
Danny Kofke
So then, what happens for those school teachers?
16:38 - 16:45
Danny Kofke
Those nurses, those people that maybe, you know, make 40 $50,000 a year, they still need that financial education as well.
16:45 - 16:47
Danny Kofke
And that's where our money mentors come in.
16:47 - 16:59
Danny Kofke
And that's kind of where we take it a little bit differently than some of the other Financial wellness companies out there, is that, you know, we walk hand in hand with you, and we'll help you in all areas Of your financial journey.
16:59 - 17:00
Danny Kofke
And we're not selling anything.
17:00 - 17:03
Danny Kofke
So all we offer, we offer education.
17:03 - 17:04
Danny Kofke
And that's it.
17:04 - 17:08
Danny Kofke
So we're not, we're not Advising, we're not selling insurance or not a solid retirement, anything like that.
17:08 - 17:15
Danny Kofke
If we, you know, if you're ready to start retirement, we can lead you in the right direction, But we're not making money off of that.
17:15 - 17:20
Danny Kofke
So I think that's a big thing, where we're not biased, and we can just kinda help Where you are.
17:21 - 17:35
Danny Kofke
Because I will say I've had the past when I was in the investment world, I would sit down with people that They had, you know, like $20,000 a credit card debt, And I knew in order for my company to make money, they had to invest, right?
17:35 - 17:39
Danny Kofke
But I'm like, I am not telling you to invest, because you're paying 24% interest.
17:39 - 17:47
Danny Kofke
I cannot guarantee any investment is going to earn 24% interest a year, But yet, if you pay off your debt, in Essence, that's what you're earning.
17:47 - 17:53
Danny Kofke
So, that's what I love about mentor was, just it's the bias out of it And then we offer a lot of different things on.
17:53 - 17:57
Danny Kofke
We have a podcast with video interviews with bite sized learning and just all sorts of things.
17:57 - 18:03
Danny Kofke
Just to meet people where they are and where they, they need, you know, help them get to where they need to be financially.
18:06 - 18:06
Chris Hensley
I love it.
18:06 - 18:16
Chris Hensley
I think one of the things that connected me to you was the, the financial literacy aspect, because I work with, you know, Houston Money Week and have done a lot with financial literacy in the Houston area.
18:16 - 18:18
Chris Hensley
But when I logged onto ...
18:18 - 18:28
Chris Hensley
Web site, the bite size learning, the way in bringing the, you know, kind of meeting people where they're at, it seemed a really cool way to get the message out.
18:28 - 18:29
Chris Hensley
So that was impressive.
18:29 - 18:34
Chris Hensley
So, what's the website address where people who want to find out more about Mentor?
18:35 - 18:35
Chris Hensley
Yeah.
18:35 - 18:37
Danny Kofke
Um, so, just pretty easy.
18:37 - 18:43
Danny Kofke
My mentor, zero dot com, So M Y M E N T O R O, dot com, and get started.
18:43 - 18:48
Danny Kofke
And, we have, there's a lot of things on our site that you can have access to at no cost.
18:49 - 18:54
Danny Kofke
Some of those things, like if you want the one-on-one meetings and things like that, that's when there is a monthly fee.
18:54 - 19:02
Danny Kofke
But for, you know, if you just wanna kinda take a look and get in there, we have a lot of free resources that you can kind of just dive around and see what you think.
19:03 - 19:07
Chris Hensley
I love it, I love it, Dannie, we're right here at the end of the show.
19:07 - 19:08
Chris Hensley

19:08 - 19:15

19:16 - 19:20
Danny Kofke

19:21 - 19:24
Danny Kofke
You know, my main thing is just what I want to show others in your listeners.
19:24 - 19:26
Danny Kofke
It's just give them hope.
19:26 - 19:28
Danny Kofke
Um, you know, we look around right now.
19:28 - 19:29
Danny Kofke
I mean, we can't control inflation.
19:29 - 19:36
Danny Kofke
We can't control who's gonna be the next president, we can't control any of that, but we can control our financial house.
19:36 - 19:39
Danny Kofke
And that's where you know inventory comes in.
19:39 - 19:40
Danny Kofke
We want you to take control.
19:40 - 19:45
Danny Kofke
I don't want you to really care about, honestly, who's who's in Washington, DC, because it really doesn't matter to you.
19:45 - 19:52
Danny Kofke
They're gonna say stuff that, you know, politician, I know really does care about my finances, individuals' care, about their own.
19:52 - 19:53
Danny Kofke
You're the person that you look back.
19:53 - 19:55
Danny Kofke
Again, it's looking back at you in the mirror every morning.
19:55 - 20:01
Danny Kofke

20:01 - 20:03
Danny Kofke
Empower you to make smart financial decisions.
20:03 - 20:05
Danny Kofke

20:05 - 20:08
Danny Kofke
Hope that, yes, you can do it even if you've messed up your entire life.
20:08 - 20:12
Danny Kofke
You know the best time to plant a tree was about 20 years ago.
20:12 - 20:15
Danny Kofke
The next best time is today, so we're just ready to help.
20:16 - 20:17
Chris Hensley
